The Dassault Falcon 900B is a three-engine executive jet aircraft for two crew and up to 19 passengers. Dassault announced the development of the Dassault Falcon 900 on 27 May 1983 at the Paris Airshow. The Falcon 900 is a development of the Dassault Falcon 50, itself a development of the earlier Dassault Falcon 20. The prototype of the Falcon 900, the "Spirit of Lafayette", flew first on 21 September 1984. French certification was awarded on 14 March 1986. By the end of 1986, the first Falcon 900s were delivered to the customers. The Falcon 900B is an improved model of the Falcon 900, featuring improved engines and increased range. The development of the Falcon 900 is still going on: the Falcon 900EX is featuring further improvements in engines and range and an all glass cockpit. The Falcon 900C is a lower-cost companion to the Falcon 900EX and replaced the Falcon 900B. The current versions are the Falcon 900EX EASy and the Falcon 900DX. In 2008, Dassault announced another development of the 900 series; the Falcon 900LX incorporating High Mach Blended Winglets designed by Aviation Partners Inc. The same winglets are being developed for the entire Falcon 900 series as a retrofit kit with certification planned for 2009.

The 1994-built Dassault Falcon 900B c/n 123 was testflown as F-WWFL and registered RA-09001 in Russia. Dassault Falcon 900B RA-09001 of Gazprom arrived at Groningen Airport Eelde in the Netherlands in the evening of 5 December and departed to Moscow in the morning of 6 December.
